In 17th Century Amsterdam in the midst of Tulipomania, an orphaned girl (Alicia Vikander) is married off to a rich and powerful merchant (Christoph Waltz) – an unhappy “arrangement” that saves her from poverty.
After her husband commissions a young painter to do her portrait, she and the young artist (Dane DeHaan) soon begin a passionate affair. Scheming to run away and escape the merchant’s ever-tightening grasp, the lovers risk everything and gamble on the frenzied tulip bulb market, with the hope that the right bulb will make their fortune. Tulipomania was the 17th century version of our recent real estate bamboozle. Based on the international bestselling novel by Deborah Moggach, the film, written by Tom Stoppard, Oscar winner for SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, is directed by Justin Chadwick and also stars Cara Delevingne and Zack Galifinakis.
