Setsuko is a single woman who’s restless in her Tokyo life. But when her niece convinces her to enroll in an unorthodox English class that requires her to put on a blonde wig and inhabit the role of an American alter ego named “Lucy,” things change.
As Setsuko inhabits Lucy’s character, something dormant awakens in her — including romantic feelings for her instructor, John (Josh Hartnett). But when John suddenly disappears and Setsuko learns that he was secretly dating her niece, she flies halfway across the world to the outskirts of Southern California in search of the runaway couple. In a brave new world of tattoo parlors and seedy motels, Setsuko struggles to preserve the dream and promise of “Lucy.” With its idiosyncratic charm and an unexpectedly touching story, Hirayanaga’s film is a unique and gutsy first feature. – In English and Japanese with subtitles.
