Music is the tie that binds a Brooklyn father and daughter in a film that refuses to go sappy on us thanks to the tough core of intelligence and wit that Nick Offerman brings to the party. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
Frank (Nick Offerman) is a single dad who spends his days working at his record store, which is about to go out of business at the very same time that his daughter Sam (Kiersey Clemons) is leaving for college. Seeking one last chance for some father-daughter bonding, he urges Sam to keep up with their weekly “jam sesh” while she’s still in town for one last summer. After the duo compose a song that gains a little attention on the Internet, Frank and Sam’s music helps them find the courage to confront their life transitions. A family dramedy with a fun cast (including Toni Collette, Ted Danson, Blythe Danner, and Sasha Lane), Hearts Beat Loud is a charming, luminous exploration of the bittersweet joys of family, romance, and the ties that bind us.
