Dirty Dancing

Released in 1987 with little fanfare, DIRTY DANCING, the musical/love story set in the Catskills in the early ’60s, became a mega-hit film that later spawned a stage musical seen by millions world-wide.

Replete with sexy dancing and an iconic soundtrack, this star-crossed summer romance follows Frances “Baby” Houseman (Jennifer Grey), who grows up fast over the course of a few hot-and-charged up weeks in a dance-crazy Catskills resort in 1963. Against the wishes of her family, this Peace Corps-bound young woman, the apple of her doctor-father’s eye (Jerry Ohrbach),  discovers  love, class consciousness and her breakout life as a “dirty dancer” once she meets Johnny Castle  (Patrick Swayze). He’s Kellerman Resorts’ macho mambo instructor and social director who enlists Baby to replace Penny, his regular  dance partner, who’s been sidelined. This fusion of drama and dance is set against a back drop of powerful political content –  class, race,  Vietnam, and a pre-Roe v. Wade abortion.
