Paced to the rhythms of its late-summer setting, Kogonada’s debut feature unfolds as a gently drifting, deeply absorbing conversation that constantly reinvents itself.
When his father falls into a coma, Jin (John Cho) finds himself stuck in an unusual Midwestern city. Though not a fan of architecture, the town is renowned for its modernist buildings, and Jin strikes up a friendship with Casey (Haley Lu Richardson) — a bright young librarian who guides him through its history. As the two begin to talk, they develop a curious intimacy. Jin reveals his estranged relationship with his father and Casey shares her reluctance to leave her mother, a recovering drug addict. A harmonious blend of cerebral and emotional storytelling, COLUMBUS is a meditation on spiritual spaciousness and on being in the modern world.
