Academy Award Nominee – Best Cinematography, Best Director, Best Foreign Language Film
Like IDA, the director’s previous picture that won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film (2014), COLD WAR’s passionate love story about star-crossed lovers is set in the ruins of post-war Poland and Europe.
Wiktor (Tomasz Kot), given the task of forming a patriotic dance and music troupe for the people’s Poland, travels the countryside looking for talent. When he auditions lovely Zula (Joanna Kulig) a young singer, he’s instantly smitten. Their love affair is the heart of the film. And music – the Polish folk tunes, communist-propaganda anthems and especially jazz and Parisian torch songs – sets the mood and the crystalline, shimmering black-and-white cinematography sets the tone. But their’s is an impossible love story challenged by politics, character flaws and unfortunate twists of fate that moves from Poland to Paris and back.
“The torn curtain of love is the theme of Paweł Pawlikowski’s mysterious, musically glorious and visually ravishing film set in cold war Poland and beyond… The wounded love at its centre surfaces from the depths of cynicism, exhaustion and state-sponsored submission and fear.”
