Soul Kitchen is a restaurant in a scruffy neighborhood of Hamburg whose anguished proprietor, Zinos (Adam Bousdoukos), can’t decide whether to stay and fight for his business or chase his wayward girlfriend to Shanghai. With bills, a bad back, and a temperamental, haute-cuisine chef (played ferociously by Head On’s protagonist Biron Unel), Zinos leans toward splitting for China. But when his ne’er-do-well brother, Illias (Moritz Bleibtreu), gambles the property away, Zinos gets a reality check about what matters the most to him. Teenaged Ree (Jennifer Lawrence in a breakout performance) is the de facto mother of her largely dysfunctional family. To save the family home, she must find her irresponsible crystal-meth dealing father who’s jumped bail. Negotiating the dangerous local criminal underworld and the harsh Ozark wilderness, Ree has little time to do her detective work amongst her extended family of hillbilly relatives living in the area. But the more she questions them, the more we see that her dad is a man nobody wants to find alive. R / 100 mins.
