Trumbo

An engaging  recreation of both the glamour and oppressive mood of post-World War II America, TRUMBO stars Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston as Dalton Trumbo one of the most emblematic figures of Hollywood’s Golden Age — a prolific screenwriter and political activist/idealist who worked constantly and defiantly, though at significant personal and professional cost.

Hunched over a makeshift desk in the bathtub, a tumbler of scotch beside him and a cigarette holder clamped between his teeth, Dalton Trumbo wrote countless screenplays. From B-movies to Oscar winners, he remained prolific throughout his career, even during the 13 years he was blacklisted by the movie business for being a communist. An outspoken member of the so-called Hollywood Ten, Trumbo did in fact identify as communist. Nevertheless, when called before the House Un-American Activities Committee, he refused to name names and was cited for contempt of Congress, resulting in a year-long prison sentence and a prominent place on the studios’ blacklist. Unable to obtain employment under his own name upon release, Trumbo at first accepted bottom dollar to write scripts pseudonymously for the King Brothers, sibling entrepreneurs who leveraged their slot-machine-rental fortune into a B-movie production company. Unwilling to compromise, he did some of his best work during those years — even winning an Oscar for THE BRAVE ONE — until his public crediting for the epics EXODUS and SPARTACUS in 1960 helped bring the blacklist era to an end. Featuring exceptional performances by Cranston and a remarkable supporting cast — including Diane Lane, Elle Fanning, Louis C.K., Helen Mirren, and a show-stealing John Goodman — TRUMBO is an entertaining drama that sheds light on one of the darkest chapters in Hollywood history.
