If dressing gorgeously is the best revenge, then talented fashion designer Tilly Dunnage (Kate Winslet) is all set when she returns home to Dungatar, a dusty town in the Australian outback.

In Jocelyn Moorhouse’s adaptation of The Dressmaker set in the ’50s, Tilly returns home after years of working in high-end Parisian fashion houses. She hopes to reconcile with her eccentric mother (Judy Davis), but she’s also back to deal with the skeletons in her closet even as she’s falling in love with the pure-hearted Teddy (Liam Hemsworth). The small town and its dowdy inhabitants aren’t ready for Tilly’s bombshell dresses and take-no-prisoners attitude, but once they get a look at her work, they are putty in her hands. Armed with her sewing machine and haute couture style, Tilly transforms the women of the town, exacting sweet revenge on those who did her wrong when she was a mere youth. Award-winning costume designer Margot Wilson was responsible for Winslet’s dresses, which take their cues from the chicest designs of the early ’50s. Tilly has studied with the best of the best in Europe, so her clothes reflect the influences of mentors like Balenciaga and Dior.
