In this atmospheric thriller from writer/director Sofia Coppola, the arrival of a Union soldier (Colin Farrell) disrupts the cloistered existence of women at a Virginia boarding school.
Set in the south during the Civil War, the dynamic between Yankee and Southern ladies is cool at first. But as the women provide refuge and tend to the soldier’s wounds, a sexual tension fills the house’s dim rooms. While he convalesces, the school’s proprietor (Nicole Kidman) is arch and watchful, the teacher (Kirsten Dunst) is lonely, and the students (Elle Fanning, Oona Laurence) are jealous. As the film coils around its characters, it becomes increasingly unclear whether the soldier is manipulating his caregivers or whether the women are playing out their own power games through him. A movie that crackles with wicked humor, The Beguiled is a delicious adaptation of Thomas Cullinan’s southern gothic novel and an innovative remake of the Clint Eastwood’s 1971 classic.
