Whether in front of a camera in her 1970s Sarasota, Florida TV newsroom, or at home with her mother, Christine Chubbuck was nearly always on edge, unable to find peace.

Rebecca Hall’s performance as Christine, a tv journalist hoping to do serious work who’s bogged down in a personal and career crisis, is sensitive both to the singularities of psychological collapse and the indignities weathered by a woman in a 1970s newsroom. Always the smartest person in the room, she believes she is destined for bigger things and is relentless in her pursuit of an on-air position in a larger market. As an aspiring newswoman with an eye for nuance and an interest in social justice, she finds herself constantly butting heads with her boss (Tracy Letts), who pushes for juicier stories that will drive up ratings. Plagued by self-doubt and an unsatisfying personal life, Christine perks up when an on-air co-worker (Michael C. Hall) initiates a friendship. But as her world continues to close in on her, Christine takes a dark and surprising turn. Based on a true story, Ms.Hall turns in an impeccable and powerful performance. The spot-on supporting cast, in addition to Michael C. Hall, includes Tracy Letts, Maria Dizzia, Timothy Simons, and J. Smith-Cameron.
