The sensation of this year’s Sundance Film Festival, where it took the top prizes for Fiction Film and Cinematography. BEASTS tells a magical yet eerily familiar tale from the perspective of a precocious young girl named Hushpuppy.
The Bathtub sits in a mythical and dangerous corner of the Missisippi delta. Six year-old Hushpuppy lives with her stern father, Wink. She mostly takes care of herself and a few animals; her mother simply “swam away” one day. Her father, who beats her when he’s angry, teaches Hushpuppy resilience and strength. When her school teacher warns her that a storm will come and wash away the bathtub and bring back with it an extinct breed of cattle called “aurochs,” Hushpuppy is determined to stand her ground to protect her fragile homeland from destruction.
