Winner of the 2013 Golden Globe as well as the Palme D’Or at Cannes and Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Film, Michael (Cache, The White Ribbon, The Piano Teacher) Haneke’s film draws on the talents of Jean-Louis Trintignant (A Man and A Woman, The Conformist…) and Emmanuelle Riva (Hiroshima Mon Amour) to detail the dilemma that confronts a married couple in their eighties as one of them gradually succumbs to illness.
Ensconced in an apartment that fits them like an old glove and happily settled into their long-established domestic routines, Georges and Anne’s world is upended when Anne suddenly displays symptoms of a stroke. As Georges struggles to care for her at home, each day brings new challenges. After a brief time, a visit from the couple’s dutiful daughter Eva (Isabelle Huppert) proves how distant Georges and Anne’s lives are from the rest of the world. A masterpiece of compassion and understanding, Haneke’s film is a magisterial work from an artist who gazes fearlessly, unblinkingly into the soul.
